Today, Kelly and I had the last In-n-Out Burgers we’ll see for at least 3 months. If you’ve ever had one, you’ll know what a sacrifice that is. Our first year of marriage has been rich in love … and fatty foods.
We’ve both added more than a few pounds along the way.
So, tommorrow begins our first truly committed and concentrated effort to get back in shape. The plan is simple … better eating habits, fewer calories and more exercise. Looking better will be a nice by-product, but it the least important objective of this initiative. As we are actively trying to start our family, we took a long, hard look at a few things.
First, we’re not old, but we aren’t young either. We want to be active participants in the lives of our kids, much like our parents before us. So, starting our family later in life makes improving and maintaining our health over the next 25 years very, very important. Second, disciplining ourselves now allows us to create better habits and behaviors for our kids to model. After all, the apple does not fall far from the tree. Third, we want to live an active life well into our dotage.
We plan to be hiking and diving once the kids are off to college, so we better rebuild that foundation now.
Finally, getting back in shape can only help offset some of the individual health issues both of us now face. Don’t call in alarm. There is nothing new to report. Let’s just say the writing is on the wall and we both clearly understand that we are not 20 years old and bulletproof any longer.
Getting back to a healthy lifestyle should not be unduly hard for either of us. As kids and young adults, we were both high-level athletes … Kelly a dancer and I a martial artist. And, until the last 5 years, we both ate exceptionally healthy diets. So, our bodies know how to be in shape and our minds and spirits know how to get there. We just need to put it all together.
So, please keep us in your thoughts and send us positive reinforcement through the ether.
Peace,
Doug and Kelly
